We didn\u2019t want chemicals in the garden, so untreated wood seemed like the best choice\u2014but over time, it just couldn\u2019t hold up. My husband had to get creative with one of the beds so that it fit properly in the prior garden bed space. You can see him describe this in the YouTube video above. Here\u2019s exactly how we made the switch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Removed the old wooden beds<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We left most of the soil in place. Using a shovel, we dug back the dirt 7\u201312 inches from the edges, piling it into the middle or onto a tarp. Then we carefully lifted out the old frames.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prepared the ground<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We laid down landscape fabric and added a layer of gravel to improve drainage and help level the beds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assembled the Birdies beds<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The beds were built from panels in our garage and then placed in the garden. Bracing kits and corner panels ensured everything was stable. Estimated assembly time: about 45 minutes per bed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level and secure<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One part of the garden wasn\u2019t level, so we used retaining wall rocks and gravel to build it up.
