If you’ve ever been charmed by Beatrix Potter’s stories, from Peter Rabbit to Jemima Puddle-Duck, this book offers a beautiful peek into the real gardens and landscapes that inspired her writing and art.

Book Overview of Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life
This October, our Garden Book Club explores Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life: The Plants and Places That Inspired the Classic Children’s Tales by Marta McDowell. I’m delighted to read this book with all of you! If you love both gardening and storybooks, this one is a treasure. McDowell gives us a fresh look at how Beatrix Potter’s love of nature shaped her art, her gardens, and her life.
Whether you are an avid gardener, a nature lover, or just curious about the gardens behind the beloved stories of Beatrix Potter this book will offer you a new lens to see beauty and creativity in the natural world.
Book Layout of Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life
The book is divided up into three parts. The first part is more of an autobiography and the sections are labeled with botanical terms like germination, offshoots, flowering, roots, ripening, setting seed. The second part is a year in the life of Beatrix Potter’s gardens and is divided up by winter, spring, summer, autumn. The third part is all about visiting Beatrix Potter’s Gardens.
The book is available as an audio book, however I would suggest getting the physical copy because the book is filled with beautiful artwork and paintings done by the author herself of different gardens she grew up around or her own gardens. Additionally, the book has photographs of Beatrix during different seasons of her life as well as maps of where she lived or where her gardens were located.
