Gardening as Worship: Stewarding God's Creation -

When I step into my garden each morning, I’m reminded that gardening is about so much more than growing tomatoes, flowers, or herbs. It’s an invitation to participate in something much bigger and a beautiful act of stewardship that began in the very first pages of Scripture.

The Bible tells us that God created a garden before He created cities. In the Garden of Eden, He placed Adam and Eve among trees, plants, rivers, and abundant life. He gave humanity the responsibility to care for His creation, cultivating and protecting it (Genesis 2:15). From the beginning, tending the earth was never meant to be a burden it was a gift.

Stewardship, Not Ownership

Our gardens are not simply places to produce food or create beautiful landscapes. They are small pieces of God’s creation that have been placed in our care.

In Genesis 2:15, God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden “to work it and keep it.” The Hebrew word translated keep is shamar, which means to guard, protect, preserve, and watch over. From the very beginning, humanity’s role wasn’t to exploit creation but to faithfully care for it as stewards of God’s world.

Stewardship means recognizing that the earth ultimately belongs to the Lord (Psalm 24:1). As gardeners, we have the privilege of caring for the soil, protecting beneficial insects, welcoming pollinators, conserving resources, and making choices that help future generations enjoy the beauty and abundance of creation.

For me, this means embracing sustainable, organic, and eco-friendly gardening practices whenever possible. Healthy soil, composting, planting for pollinators, reducing unnecessary chemicals, and working with nature instead of against it are practical ways I seek to live out the calling of shamar—to lovingly guard and care for what God has entrusted to us.

Perfect stewardship isn’t about doing everything flawlessly. It’s about faithfully caring for what we’ve been given.

That perspective has shaped the way I garden.

I believe the Creator of the universe is the God of the Bible and that every seed, every harvest, every pollinator, and every changing season reflects His wisdom and creativity. While gardening certainly requires planning, hard work, and patience, the miracle of life itself belongs to Him. We plant, we water, but God is the One who causes things to grow (1 Corinthians 3:6–7).

Because of that, I strive to garden in ways that honor the One who entrusted this earth to us.

The Garden Teaches Us

Gardening has a remarkable way of slowing us down and reminding us of eternal truths.

Seeds teach us hope.

The changing seasons teach us patience.

Pruning teaches us that healthy growth sometimes requires letting go.

Harvest reminds us that faithful work often bears fruit in its proper time.

Every year, my garden reminds me that God is both Creator and Sustainer. Long before I planted my first raised bed, He designed the intricate relationships between plants, insects, soil organisms, rainfall, and sunlight that make life possible.

The more I learn about the natural world, the more it increases my awe of its Designer.

Giving Glory Where It Belongs

Every good gift comes from God.
